competition rules§1 The name of the competition The name of the competition is “Fennia Prize - Good design grows global”. §2 Organizers The Fennia Prize competition is arranged by Design Forum Finland and the Fennia Group. Design Forum Finland is a promotion organization for Finnish design maintained by the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design. Design Forum Finland is responsible for launching and realizing the competition, related information, the prize exhibition and its additional programme and the tour of the exhibition. The Fennia Group supports business and entrepreneurship and wishes to reinforce the competitiveness of companies. The Fennia Prizes are donated by the Fennia Group. §3 The purpose of the competition The Fennia Prize is meant to encourage firms and companies to apply design innovatively in product development, manufacturing and in their corporate image. §4 Participation, competition series and stipulations The Fennia Prize competition is open to companies producing designed goods or utilizing design in other ways in their business. Designed items realized no earlier than two years previously, hereinafter “products”, are eligible to be submitted for the competition. Detailed instructions for participation are given in the competition brief. There are two series in the competition: the Product Design Series and the Open Series. Material consumer and investment goods, product collections and product systems can be submitted for the Product DesignSeries. The Open Series is for realized projects in which design has been utilized in business in other ways than defined for the product design series. Business concepts and environments as well as service concepts and environments (hereinafter “products”) can be submitted for the Open Series. The entries are to be subject to evaluation on the basis of § 5 herein. §5 Evaluation criteria A prize-winning company shall demonstrate high-standard design expertise. Both competition series take into account the aesthetic qualities of the products, their suitability to the visual environment and the way in which a product communicates desired values and meanings. The evaluation criteria are itemized as follows: Business. Evaluation considers the way in which the product promotes the manufacturer’s or user’s business operations. Usability. Evaluation considers the suitability of the product for its function, users and use environment. Responsibility. Evaluation considers the responsibility of the product with regard to society and the environment. The prize jury will assess the specific weight of the criteria individually with regard to products. The jury may also require a product to have other properties characteristic of good design that are not mentioned herein. The jury will also consider the visual corporate image of the participating company in addition to the submitted product. §6 Prizes and announcement The Fennia Prize awards and the related honourable mentions will be awarded to companies. In the competition, one Fennia Prize Grand Prix winner will be selected from among all participants. In addition, two Fennia Prize winners will be chosen jointly from both series, as well as 15-25 recipients of the Fennia Prize honourable mentions. The prize sum is confirmed in the competition brief. The prize jury may, upon unanimous decision, decide to award the prize sum differently. The prize includes participation in the Fennia Prize and inclusion in the exhibition catalogue, the right to use the Fennia Prize logo in connection with the product in question and in related information and marketing. The Fennia Prize exhibition is a touring exhibition featuring all the prize-winning products. The exhibition catalogue presents the prize-winning products and manufacturers as well as their designers. The Fennia Prize awards and honourable mentions are given to the recipients in connection with the opening of the Fennia Prize exhibition. §7 The prize jury The winners of the Fennia Prize awards and honourable mentions are chosen by a prize jury consisting of experts representing design, the business community and the media. The jury shall have a maximum of nine members, one of whom is to be an internationally noted figure in the design world. Representatives of the Fennia Group and Design Forum Finland are automatically included in the prize jury. The prize jury is appointed by the board of Design Forum Finland in accordance with an agreement with the Fennia Group. The prize jury shall make its choice of the prize winner from among candidates chosen by a preliminary jury. The prize jury is entitled to take under consideration entries rejected by the preliminary jury. §8 The preliminary jury The preliminary jury shall consist of three professionals in the field of industrial design. Two of the members shall be appointed by Design Forum Finland and one by the TKO Association of Industrial Designers of Finland. The preliminary jury shall inspect all the products submitted for the competition and shall present its proposal to the prize jury regarding the products for further consideration. §9 The competition secretariat Representatives of the Fennia Group and Design Forum Finland shall serve as the secretaries of the competition. §10 Rights of use of materials Design Forum Finland and the Fennia Group shall have the right, without providing compensation, to use materials of the prize-winning companies, such as photographs of products and material produced from them in printed and electronic information and in the marketing of competitions and exhibitions. §11 The competition brief, registration and fees The competition is held biennially in years of odd number. A separate competition brief shall be issued for each competition. The competition schedule, registration procedure, product presentation material, fees for registration and participating in the competition and the prize sums shall be specified in the competition brief. The competition brief shall be specified by the board of Design Forum Finland in accordance with an agreement with the Fennia Group. Upon registration, the company entering the competition agrees to pay the registration fee, and if chosen for the prize exhibition to participate in it and to pay the participation fee. Participation in the exhibition shall be carried out according to the instructions of the organizers. Commitment to the exhibition shall also apply to any tour that the exhibition may have. The organizers of the competition shall be responsible for shipping and insurance costs during the exhibition and any tour that it may have. Registration shall be in force upon payment of the fees laid down in the competition brief. §12 Product presentation materials In connection with registration in the competition, the presentation material of the submitted product shall be sent together with the registration form. The product presentation material shall be specified in the competition brief. Upon request, a company registered in the competition shall agree to provide its submitted product for inspection by the prize jury. The prize jury may request a representative of the company to present the product. In such a case, the company shall be responsible for any costs related to the presentation of the product and for all costs of shipping and returning the product and for insurance during transport and evaluation. §13 Confirmation of awareness of the competition rules By entering the competition the participating company also confirms acceptance of the competition rules and related payment obligations and that it has the rights to the submitted product or series of products.
