URSUK OY / SUUNTO
THE DS6 DRY SUIT FOR SAILING

Design: Jasmine Julin-Aro, Marko Kallionpää 2006

The dry suit combines comfort in use and the heavy requirements of sailing. The design and product development of details indicate a thorough knowledge of sailing.

The Ursuk company produces, markets and imports diving and rescue suits for truly demanding use and conditions. The users of its products include rescue authorities and the Finnish Defence Forces, with the product range including clothing for offshore oilrig workers and fighter and helicopter pilots. But the Ursuk products also offer alternatives for ordinary boaters and fishing enthusiasts as well. The range has now come to include a new type of sailing suit.

The DS6 dry suit combines comfort in use with the requirements of a demanding sport. The traditional dry suit is a single-part overall with one long zipper. Putting on and removing the suit are difficult and time-consuming. A two-part sailing outfit, in turn, lets water in at the waist, neck and cuffs.

The DS6 suit is a combination of jacket and trousers, in which the parts are joined with a waterproof zipper and a patented locking system around the waist. The lock also closes ends of the zippers to be watertight. The locations of the lock and zippers have been carefully considered in order to avoid hindrance to sitting or movement. Neoprene borders ensure the close fit of the cuffs and collar. Watertight socks are integrated with the trousers. The fabric is of multi-ply laminated special material.

The suit serves both as wind-proof rainwear and as a dry suit. It also provides some degree of buoyancy and protection against hypothermia. The airtight suit does not require as much clothing to be worn underneath it as traditional rainwear. Consisting of two parts, it is easy to put on and remove when taking a break. Owing to its developed materials, the suit breathes and is pleasant to wear.

The design and product development of reinforcements, colours, fasteners and other details all indicate a thorough knowledge of the practical aspects and needs of sailing. The parts that are easily soiled are dark, while bright blue and red are used for noticeability. The reflectors aid recognition in darkness, and the fluorine yellow hood in daylight.
