VIVERO OY
THE ROSEBUD CHAIR

Design: Ilkka Suppanen 2006

This small and light chair is comfortable. Distinction in the market is ensured by design that is original, yet international. The sparse use of materials is also economical.

Founded in 1980, Vivero Oy is a company specializing mainly in office furniture. Its line of products also includes sofas and chairs for lobbies and waiting rooms.

The Rosebud chair is the first item of furniture designed by Ilkka Suppanen for Vivero. The small and light chair changes appearance when viewed from different angles: the surface of the cup-shaped seat is folded like a Japanese origami. Despite its small size, the chair is comfortable in use. Although it has no armrests, the back extends to the sizes and lets users rest their arms. Its side profile also bears recollections of the sled in Orson Welles’s film ”Citizen Kane”, from which the name of the chair was taken.

The frame of the chair is form-pressed plywood upholstered with thin cushioning and a woollen fabric. There are two alternatives for the legs, a light and slender metal tube leg or a heavier flange leg. The contrast of the solid upper part and the light lower part is one of the interesting features of the chair.

The restricted use of materials is also economical, providing low manufacturing costs. The prize jury noted that the advantage of the chair is that its original yet international design will ensure distinctiveness in the market.
