ARABIA / IITTALA GROUP OY ABOMA TABLEWAREDesign: Harri Koskinen 2007 (Product Design Series) The Oma collection serves all tableware needs: products that are also suited to other Arabia collections. With objects made of wood, glass, ceramics and metal and with a wide range of uses, it will stand the test of time, representing the best of Finnish design for everyday needs. Tableware are the cornerstone of the product range of the time-honoured Arabia porcelain factory, now belonging to the Iittala Group. One of the most recent products in this category is the 24-part Oma service introduced on the market in 2007. Oma contains everything for the table. A traditional aspect of the service is its large range of different-sized plates and glasses, while many of its items of new type are a novelty. Oma includes ceramics and glassware as well as an oak serving tray and a large aluminium bowl. Other items are a bottle for oil or salad dressing, two shallow ceramic platters, a small cup, for example, for soy sauce and a small wooden spoon. Despite the use of four different materials, the same language of form links the different products. The colour scheme is studiedly simple, with white ceramics, clear and blue glass, uncoloured aluminium and oak-hued wood. A distinctly minimalist language of form was sought for Oma, as it was felt that items of this kind had a place in the company’s product range. On the other hand, round forms, for example in the recess of the plates, softened the otherwise severe overall impression. The tableware was designed for a new and hitherto more demanding group of consumers looking for a new kind of luxury, tableware of quality to go with new types of dishes, such as sushi and tapas, and for both everyday and festive use. Oma carries on the tradition of Scandinavian artefact design and the distinct line followed by Arabia with aesthetic and practical considerations as its core principles. Oma’s uncluttered idiom of form will ensure a long period of use for this tableware, and it is expected to become a classic of the future.
