ISKU KOTI OYTIMO FURNITURE COLLECTIONDesign: Timo Soikkeli, Leea Koskinen, Pekka Toivanen 2006–2008 (Products Design Series) The design of the Timo furniture collection proceeded from a structural idea– the curving leg of a chair or table always joins the top in the same manner. This collection is suited to Finnish homes in terms of both form and materials and the products are made in the company's own factory Isku is a traditional Finnish furniture company currently celebrating its 80th anniversary year. Isku designs, manufactures and markets furniture and interior design for homes and public facilities The concept of the Timo furniture collection originally stemmed from the use of surplus material from manufacturing. The product development process was exceptionally fast; the first items of the collection were already shown at the Helsinki Furniture Fair in the autumn of 2007, only after three weeks of preparation. The design proceeded from the structural idea of a curved plywood leg always joining the seat of the piece in the same manner. The construction of the joint is solid yet light and products can be assembled completely with dowels without the use of screws. The concept can be applied to different kinds of furniture, and consequently the original stool design evolved into a complete family of products with a stoola, a table and a bench. The material is natural-coloured birch and the table tops are of white melamine. The stools are also available in white and can be stacked. Timo furniture is ecological, even though the original of idea of using surplus manufacturing material was not possible with the product family. Among other features, the glue of the joints is water-based and environmentally friendly. The furniture series highlights Isku’s skills in the use of curved plywood and represents well the ideology of the company. The products are suited to Finnish consumers in terms of their idiom of form and materials alike. Timo furniture is made in Isku’s own factory in Finland.
