KAIPAUS FINLAND OYKAIPAUS NANOFRAGO® SCENT JEWELLERY CONCEPTDesign: Antti Eklund, Paola Suhonen, Harri Koskinen, Jussi Wright 2007–2008 (Open Series) Kaipaus jewellery contains a state-of-the-art Finnish innovation – the Nanofrago® core full of nano-sized tubes. Perfume or essential oils added to the piece will carry a scent for several weeks. A way to preserve memories. Scents evoke memories in powerful ways: freshly cut grass, wood smoke, frosty air or laundered cotton sheets will bring back recollections from years ago. The scent of a loved one’s perfume or aftershave will also create a good mood. The concept of Kaipaus scent jewellery is based on a Finnish invention utilizing nanotechnology. In the Nanofrago® process nano-sized cavities are made in ceramic paste for preserving scents, for example perfume or essential oils. The scent is slowly released from the cavities, one molecule at a time. Elements of scent can be added to products of all kinds. In the Kaipaus jewellery collection, the Nanofrago® paste releases scents at an even rate for a period of up to four weeks. The scent can be “cancelled” by placing the piece in an ordinary oven for a short while, after which a new scent can be applied. A further benefit is that perfume does not have to be applied directly on the skin, and that the scent is not too strong but instead light and even. The first Kaipaus jewellery models are the work of four leading Finnish designers, architect Antti Eklund, industrial designer Harri Koskinen, fashion designer Paola Suhonen and glass artist Jussi Wright. Although most of the pieces are traditional pendants, the collection includes a ceramic “stone” by Antti Eklund that is kept in the pocket, and a pen-like scent container of silver by Harri Koskinen. The Kaipaus collection introduces a completely new dimension to the jewellery sector – an immaterial property that can find commercial use. This technological innovation can also be applied in a variety of ways to new jewellery models. The product concept includes packaging and display stands and this innovative combination of design and technology has also convinced financing partners.
