PEDRO OYPEDRO ON SOFA-BEDDesign: Tapio Anttila 2007 (Product Design Series) The ON sofa evolved from the need to design a sofa-bed that can be converted into a double bed or two separate beds. The upper part of the sofa is simply lifted from the lower part onto its hand-rest construction. The sofa is comfortable for sitting and sleeping alike. Founded twenty years ago and operating in the Lahti region of South Finland, the Pedro company is a manufacturer of special furniture. Its main products are chairs and sofas for ships and public spaces, and in the past few years also for homes. Pedro’s references include interiors for large cruise ships, among other projects. One of the company’s main product lines consists of sofa-beds, a prime item of furniture for small homes and guest rooms. The ON sofa arose from the need to design a sofa-bed that could be turned into a double bed or two separate beds. In this design, the upper part of the sofa-bed is simply lifted off the lower part onto the handrests. Since no mechanism is needed, the conversion is easy and convenient. This also makes the sofa lighter. The sofa is made with quality materials. The frame is of form-pressed plywood and the different comfort requirements of sitting and sleeping were taken into account, which led to special solutions. The upholstery can be easily removed and washed. The ON sofa has been received positively by consumers and in the interior design press, and it was given the Furniture of the Year award of 2007.
