SAAS INSTRUMENTSMEDUSA LAMPDesign: Mikko Paakkanen 2007 (Product Design Series) The meditative Medusa lamp lives and throbs at its own slow pace. The illusion is created with optic fibre, high-power LED’s and a motor directing the movement. Saas Instruments expanded its operations, creating a lamp that successfully combines technology and design, falling into the interstice of an artwork and a utility object. Saas Instruments is a company specializing in lighting employing LED technology and fibre optics. Its achievements can, for example, be seen in museums and restaurants. In the autumn of 2007, Saas Instruments invited a number of leading Finnish designers to create lamps from components made by the company. One of the results of this project was the Medusa lamp, which has also aroused a great deal of interest in the company. Medusa is a surprising lamp of the new generation, combining movement with light. Its shape changes slowly, puffing up into a ball or growing longer and thinner – like its jellyfish namesake. The movement can also be stopped, leaving the lamp in the desired shape. Medusa is mostly made of optic fibre and high-power LED’s. A microprocessor-controlled electric motor pulls and extends the wire in the middle of the lamp to create movement. The Medusa lamp successfully combines technology and design. It is a new kind of product in the interstice of art and lamps – a meditative piece that also provides light.
