"There are two qualities that a lamp should have," says Elina Järvinen (born 1982). "It should give light without dazzling and it should be visually pleasing with or without light." Järvinen studies furniture design for the final year at the Institute of Design of the Lahti University of Applied Sciences. TRE lamps are the first products she has designed that have reached manufacturing stage. An early version of the lamp was on show in Milan last spring.

Järvinen is interested in light though she wants to design also other things than just lamps in the future. "Light has the power to shape a space, create different moods, show or hide," she says. "The most important element in lamp design is the light; its direction, character and purpose. Around this the concrete object, the lamp, is created."

Järvinen wants to design light so that it has several ways of use, not just one. The light should move and live along with you. TRE lamps are made in Finland – that is important to her, too. She only wants to design things that are genuine and useful. And if they have that special silent humour in them, even better!
