This autumn Helsinki Think Company arranged, for the second time in a row, 4UNI, an interdisciplinary solution competition for all the curious and ambitious university students in Finland. Among the 50 chosen participants there were students from 11 different universities and 39 different majors. Students applied as individuals with their own background and competences. Individuals were then matched with each other to form ten diverse teams of five. These teams started their journey in finding solutions for various problems, such as how future work will look like or how to tackle the emerging health gap between social groups.

Teams were guided through ten expert workshops including lean business development, legal support, startup culture and funding. We partnered with Design Forum Finland and they provided our teams a valuable insight into design thinking. Including design thinking already in the early stages of product and service development helped the teams achieve more coherent and viable product outcomes.

In only two months 4UNI teams managed to come up with great solution-driven business ideas. For example, SparCo. helps everyone in finding a sport buddy, whereas Mukula makes buying locally produced food easier than ever. With the help from mentors and tools learned in our expert workshops, many of the teams managed to test their ideas and further develop, change or even pilot their concept.

4UNI finals were held on 25.11. and our prestigious jury decided to award Team Kurnia (with their solution to gamify cooking) as the winner and ALA and Tribesy as runner-ups. You can read in our blog all about the finals (in Finnish). Now we can only wait and see, how far this year’s 4UNI teams will go!
