April 2018

Here at Design Forum Finland we are often asked: what is today's Finnish design? We published a book (sorry, so far only in Finnish) where answers to this question can be found. Designin uusi aalto (The new wave of design) takes the story of Finnish design to the next century and recounts how design can bring meaning and success to this changing world of ours.

Today's design is planning services and customer experience, managing brands, developing business operations and strategies. It has become increasingly important in successful companies. The book, written by Nuppu Gävert and Ville Tikka, presents ten cases about the new forms of design: worlds of products and digital services, brand experiences which create communities, business models bringing societal value, and healthy organisational cultures.

Designin uusi aalto book is available in the biggest bookstores and our own webshop.

Ornamo Award is a yearly distinction of €5,000, given to a distinguished design professional. Ornamo members are first able to suggest candidates and the final shortlist is then nominated by Ornamo's board. This year's candidates are glass artist Renata Jakowleff, interior architect Martti Lukander, and designers of the Muka va clothing brand Anna Mattelmäki and Emilia Kiialainen. The winner is always selected by someone outside of the design profession, this time journalist Sami Sykkö. The result will be announced on 26th April. Photo: Aleksi Poutanen
