Clothing designer Anna Ruohonen was awarded the Kaj Franck Design Prize in November. We interviewed Anna about her work and design principles. She thinks she is making design, not fashion, when she is looking for the right shape and proportions, in order to bring out the best features of a customer. Photo: Liisa Valonen (P.S. Anna Ruohonen's prize exhibition at the Design Museum in Helsinki, closed a few weeks ago, attracted 27 000 visitors!) (The video has English subtitles.)

Design Forum Finland participates in the EcoDesign Circle, an EU project promoting the circular economy. This project, joining together countries around the Baltic Sea, will generate various kinds of material and tools to aid circular design. One of its components is the touring exhibition Reconsider Design, which was compiled in Germany and will be on show at the Arctic Design Week in Rovaniemi. Finnish participants in the exhibition include RePack, Pure Waste and Hiilinielu Design Studio. Design Forum Finland's part of the project, EcoDesign Sprint company sparring, is currently running and it will arrange workshops at the Arctic Design Week, too. Stockholm Design Week and Furniture and Light Fair at the beginning of February are always both a vantage point of the latest interior decoration and furniture trends, and the moment of product launches, where Finnish companies are eagerly participating each year. The Finnish Cultural Institute in Stockholm will be the venue of the exhibition WELOVEWOODS which showcases furniture and light fixtures from seven Finnish and Swedish designers. A Design Talk event at the Institute, on Tue 6 February, further explains the themes and topics of the exhibition. Photo: Guest of Honour 2018 Paola Navone, Barovier & Toso, Colors 2015

Material research is one the fortes of Finnish knowhow. At the moment, the focus is on finding alternatives to plastic and several ongoing projects aim at developing cellulose-based materials and products. In early January, a seminar with the title Designing Cellulose for the Future III was also arranged in Helsinki. Professor of the Aalto University Pirjo Kääriäinen writes in Design Forum Blog about ecological and topical biomaterials. Photo: DWoC – light-weight structures, 100 % nanocellulose.
