Service design made it straight to the headlines when Mikko Koivisto was announced to be the receiver of the Ornamo Award 2017 at the end of April. Koivisto is one of the pioneers of service design and partner in the renowned service design agency Hellon. He is industrial designer by training and he was still studying when he got interested in services and immaterial design – an emerging area of design at that time. Koivisto's responsibilities at Hellon are the experiences and service the agency offers its own clients. Finland is one of the leading countries in service design and Hellon founded an agency in London, too, a few years ago. Big international clients have since been queueing behind the door. SuomiAreena is the renowned public debate forum organized by the Finnish commercial broadcasting company MTV and the City of Pori every July. This year Design Forum Finland and the Union of Sales and Marketing Professionals MMA are jointly hosting a panel discussion on the Purje stage on Friday 14 July. The question of the discussion is: could the joining of design and business expertise boost economic growth? A group of influencers from the fields of design, brand building and sales will be discussing the problems of growth and success. These influencers are: Carl Haglund, Mikko-Pekka Hanski, Elina Hiltunen, Riitta Huuhtanen, Sixten Korkman, and Miika Lipiäinen. The conversation is led by digitalist Ville Tolvanen. The language of the discussion is Finnish.

May is the month of spring exhibitions and shows of the students from Aalto University. The runway show of fashion students is already internationally established but one can find more unorthodox combinations, too – such as the exhibition Sensual Mathematics by the students of design, architecture and mathematics, at Science Centre Heureka. One of the most interesting ones is, as usual, the Product Design Course of Aalto Design Factory. Its results will be presented in the traditional Product Design Gala on Friday 19 May. This is where the future is built.

The teaching and students of the Aalto University collect renown and awards every year in international fashion competitions. One of the regular places to gain success seems to be Hyères Fashion Festival in Southern France. Finnish fashion students make it to the finals almost yearly. They did it this year, too, and again with result: Maria Korkeila won the Schiaparelli Prize with her menswear collection. Vuoden Huiput, the best in Finnish advertising and visual and graphic design, have again been announced. This annual competition, founded by designers themselves, has many competition series as well as prizes, and the awarded works are always interesting, imaginative and with outstanding visual quality. The Platinum Prize went to the man behind the new rise of the textile company Finlayson, its CEO Jukka Kurttila. Päivi Svens from Fazer Confectionery was awarded as the best client while the Grand Prix went to an application called Mightifier, aiding schoolchildren in giving positive response to their friends and family. The spring fashion week in Helsinki, 15–18 May, brings several events of the fashion industry to the city, from runway shows to seminars, not forgetting international media and fashion influencers. One of the main events of the week is Helsinki New Fashion Seminar on 16 May, with the topic Turning Creativity into Business. The speakers come from the international top of fashion industry, including designers, curators, marketing and communications professionals, and talent seekers.
