The Young Designers of 2013 and the Kaj Franck Design Prize winner of 2012 on show at Habitare

The winners of the Young Designer of the Year and the Kaj Franck design prizes, awarded by the national design promotion organization Design Forum Finland, will be on show at Habitare furniture, interior decoration and design fair in Helsinki 18–22 September 2013. The Young Designer of the Year 2013 recognition went to designers Mari Isopahkala and Iina Vuorivirta. The Kaj Franck Design Prize of 2012 was given to clothing designer Jasmiine Julin-Aro.

The Young Designer of the Year Prize can be given to one or several individuals or a team under 35 years, exhibiting new, creative concepts and skills in design. The purpose of the prize of €5,000 is to encourage young designers to carry on uncompromising and original work in design.

Mari Isopahkala is a freelance designer who represents, according to the award jury, traditional authorship in design while boldly leading it forward and crossing boundaries. The jury also underlined her solid professional approach to her work and output. Iina Vuorivirta is seeking new expression and new forms of design, challenging the design field with her alternative ways of designing. The award jury particularly noted the surprising and different nature of her work.

Professor, clothing and fashion designer Jasmiine Julin-Aro received the Kaj Franck Design Prize of 2012, awarded by Design Forum Finland, last November. This prize, named after the esteemed Finnish designer Kaj Franck, is one of the most important design awards in Finland and the winners represent many areas of top Finnish design. The prize sum of €10,000 is donated by the Finnish Fair Foundation.

Jasmiine Julin-Aro's special field is functional outfits for motorcyclists, skiers and sailing enthusiasts, among other groups. In the design of these products, she has boldly applied the results of research in the field and innovations in materials. Many products by her have been awarded design prizes both in Finland and internationally. The prize jury especially commended her role as an advocate of the Finnish clothing industry and its strengths.

The Young Designers of the Year 2013 Mari Isopahkala and Iina Vuorivirta will be present at the exhibition stall 7n11 on Wednesday 18 September 10 am–1 pm.
