Design Forum Finland to get a new strategy and a new managing director

Design Forum Finland, the promotion organization of Finnish design, will renew its strategy and create a new operating model to better suit the organization’s goals of promoting the competitive advantages enabled by design expertise.

After heading the organization since 2006, Mikko Kalhama has resigned from his position as Managing Director. Dan Colliander, former member of the Board of Directors of the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design, which maintains Design Forum Finland, will act as interim Managing Director, in addition to his other duties.

The development of a new strategy and operating model for Design Forum Finland originated from feedback received from partners and members. The new strategy aims to meet the needs of the organization’s members and Finnish businesses more efficiently than before. In the future, Design Forum Finland will focus increasingly on serving businesses and promoting the competitive advantages enabled by design expertise.

The Board has approved the key principles guiding the strategy process, and has begun to take concrete action accordingly. The organizations’ new operative structure will come into effect during 2015.

”Particularly in the international market, design has a central role in the competitiveness of businesses. It is now our task to ensure that Design Forum Finland is seen among its partners and other businesses as an actor that does fruitful long-term work that benefits Finnish businesses. To reach this goal, we will also need to develop the expertise of our people,” says Ulla Uimonen, Chairman of the Board.

”Mikko Kalhama has led Design Forum Finland during a very challenging period, and practically throughout the ongoing economic recession. Under Kalhama’s lead, Design Forum’s finances have been revived by, for instance, closing the unprofitable shop activities. Additionally, Design Forum Finland has had to rely on temporary layoffs. We would like to thank Mikko for these years and wish him all the best in the future. His work has been valuable and challenging. Now it is time to look for new expertise with a strong link to businesses,” Uimonen continues.

The Board has begun the search for a new Managing Director.
