Light and shadows – Licht und Schatten
Licht und Schatten is the fourth lighting and lamp design exhibition produced by Design Forum Finland. It is a sequel to the exhibition Finnische Dunkelheit oder wie gestaltet man Licht (The Finnish darkness or how to design light) which was on show in Berlin and Kiel in 2011. It presented Finnish contemporary lamp design to the German audience. Licht und Schatten is about new shapes, new technologies and new designers. Included in the review are both prototypes and products already in manufacture, not forgetting a couple of classics from earlier exhibitions.
In Finland, the dark winter season is long, which means that a great deal of artificial light is needed. While lamps and light fittings have inspired designers throughout history, the development of lighting technologies – with innovations such as LED bulbs – has opened up completely new opportunities for this area of design. Another viewpoint is ecology: in addition to energy consumption, for example transportation and assembly of a lamp and its whole life cycle from manufacturing to recycling can be considered in design.
The light fittings in the exhibition Licht und Schatten are examples of top Finnish contemporary design. The materials suit all needs: wood, metal, cardboard, glass, plastic, ceramics. Included are lamps for both homes and public spaces. The selection is complemented with a light therapy lamp, a lamp-cum-swing, and a lamp playing with light and shadow, thus resembling an artwork.
The exhibition features lamps from the following designers: Elina Aalto, Klaus Aalto, Mari Isopahkala, Seppo Koho, Harri Koskinen, Tero Kuitunen, Pekka Kuivamäki, Mikko Kärkkäinen, Alexander Lervik, Samuli Naamanka, Anna-Mari Niskanen, Katriina Nuutinen, Magnus Pettersen, Maija Puoskari, Simo Serpola, Antti-Jussi Silvennoinen, Jenny Stefansdotter, Kerstin Sylwan, Samuli Räisänen, Kirsti Taiviola and Iina Vuorivirta.
The companies presented are AALTO + AALTO, Feelis Helsinki, Form Us With Love, Hem, Iittala, Innolux, Melaja, Moomin Lights, Saas, Secto, Tunto and &Bros.
