Young designers in Stockholm

Design Forum Finland awards annually the Young Designer of the Year prize to interesting and promising young Finnish designers. The awarded designers of 2013, Mari Isopahkala (b. 1978) and Iina Vuorivirta (b. 1988) will be on show in Stockholm, in the Svarta Lådan window gallery on Götgatan 28 January – 24 February 2014.

Design Forum Finland's Young Designer of the Year prize can be given to designers exhibiting new, creative concepts and skills in design. The purpose of the prize of €5,000 is to encourage young designers to carry on uncompromising and original work in design. The prize has been awarded annually since 2000 and it includes an exhibition. The prizewinners are selected by a jury. The first prize in 2000 was given to designers Harri Koskinen and Ilkka Suppanen.

The prizewinners of 2013 are two interesting young designers. Mari Isopahkala is a freelance designer who studied furniture and interior design at the Lahti Institute of Design and graduated as Master of Arts from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (present-day Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture). The jury underlined her solid professional approach to her work and output. Mari Isopahkala represents traditional authorship in design while boldly leading it forward and crossing boundaries.

Iina Vuorivirta studied product design at the Lahti Institute of Design and Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. She is currently working on her Master of Arts degree at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack) in Stockholm. The award jury particularly noted the surprising and different nature of Iina Vuorivirta’s work. Seeking new expression and new forms of design, Vuorivirta challenges the design field with her alternative ways of designing.

Design Forum Finland is the promotion organization of Finnish design. It is maintained by the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design, which was founded in 1875. The premises of Design Forum Finland are at no. 7 Erottajankatu Street in central Helsinki, opposite Dianapuisto Park in the heart of Design District Helsinki.
