DESIGN DISTRICT HELSINKI
Background
Helsinki offers an ideal place to get to know Finnish design and to buy top-class Finnish design products! Located in the centre of Helsinki, the new Design District is an area full of design and antique shops, fashion stores, museums, art galleries, restaurants and showrooms. Here you can find the most interesting names, classics, trend-setters and so much more.
The goal of the Design District activities is to make the area known as a cluster of creative actors and to increase its attractiveness to the visitors. Additionally, the aim is to actively contribute to the increased cultural tourism in Helsinki. For the small entrepreneurs this means improved business opportunities, networking, joint marketing efforts and much more.
In future, the Design District Association also aims at contributing to the design of the physical environment including lightning, street signs etc. One of the main goals is to make Diana park in the heart of the district known as an active and lively design park.
Design District Helsinki Association
In spring 2005, Design District Helsinki Association was established in order to coordinate the activites. Today, the association has more than 100 members and is financed by the member fees. Operations are coordinated by the board, a part-time executive manager and Design Forum Finland.
Cooperation with tourist organizations
From the beginning, the Design District activities have been planned in close cooperation with various tourist organizations (Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau, Helsinki Expert, The Finnish Tourist Board etc.). For instance, Helsinki Expert organized guided walking tours in the Design District during summer 2005 and will continue these in summer 2006.
