KLAUS HAAPANIEMI “Contemporary Baroque with a Scandinavian twist” is how Klaus Haapaniemi (b. 1970) describes his style. This London-based graphic designer has attracted attention with his ornamental patterns, which meld the aesthetics of Slavic decorativism, Japanese manga cuteness, and fin-de-siècle decadence. Haapaniemi has designed print patterns for Diesel,Dolce & Gabbana, Cacharel, and Levi’s, among others. In March 2007,Iittala launched the Taika tableware collection, for which Haapaniemi createdan ornamental, fairy-story design. www.klaush.com < Illustration |

JANNE KYTTÄNEN Janne Kyttänen (b. 1974) wants to create a virtual environment in which digital objects can be “printed” just as easily as loading music onto an MP3 player. Kyttänen’s Amsterdam office Freedom of Creation utilizes a technique called Rapid Manufacturing, which can be used to generate a physical version of a digitally designed object anywhere in the world, cost-efficiently and as a single unit if desired. Many of Kyttänen’s designs, such as his flowerlike lamps, are inspired by the symmetry and regularity of nature.
