Design Forum Finland has awarded prizes to firms and companies since 1990, when the Pro Finnish Design competition was established.
The Pro Finnish Design prizes and honourable mentions were awarded until 2001. The very first prize of the competition went to a dental chair made by the Fimet company. The Pro Finnish Design competition was held biennially and six Pro Finnish Design prizes and 52 honourable mentions were awarded.
In 2003, the competition became international and was renamed Fennia Prize – Good Design Grows Global. It came to include a Grand Prix in 2007. In 2012 the Fennia Prize Competition was included in the programme of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 year. In 2017, the competition will celebrate the 100th anniversary of independent Finland.
Fennia Prize is an opportunity to stand out from competitors with the aid of innovative and responsible design that is also of economic significance. Three Grands Prix, 14 Fennia Prizes and 82 honourable mentions have been awarded so far. The outcome of the competition is always a cross-section of the best, most interesting and most successful design in Finland from a few previous years. The winners of the prizes and honourable mentions range from medical equipment and consumer products to services and design for heavy industry. They all are good examples of how Finnish business life and society are developed through design methods.
The awardees have included companies known for their involvement in design in other respects as well. The largest number of prizes – seven – has gone to Suunto, with Rocla and Fiskars in shared second place with six prizes each. Five prizes have been awarded to Iittala and Nokia.
From the very beginning the prize criteria have underlined usability, business competence and responsibility. High standard design is a self-evident central factor of success.
