Last week, interior architect and designer Tapio Anttila received one of the biggest design prizes in Finland, the Kaj Franck Design Prize. This prize, established in 1992, is awarded by Design Forum Finland, with the Finnish Fair Foundation as the sponsor of the prize sum. The first designer to receive the prize was Oiva Toikka, who has been followed by an impressive list of great names of Finnish design.
The Kaj Franck Design Prize was established when designer Kaj Franck was still alive. The aim of the prize is to honour the spirit and principles of his work: high-quality, democratic and functional design that solves practical challenges and supports design-related business. According to Franck’s philosophy, this also means beauty and joy to everyday life and enhances the quality of life.
Tapio Anttila is the 27th receiver of the prize. The prize jury appreciated, among other things, his strong and comprehensive furniture brand Tapio Anttila Collection and the confident and individual design idiom in furniture design. The starting points of his work lie in functionalities and the users’ needs; the cooperation with furniture manufacturers is fluent.
Tapio Anttila has developed a functioning design business in furniture, which is challenging as the Finnish market is not very large. At first, the Tapio Anttila Collection was created from compatible products designed for various companies and already in production; later it has been developed as an independent brand. The forms of cooperation depend of the manufacturer.
Long experience and strong professional expertise, combined with flexibility and the ability to find new opportunities have been Tapio Anttila’s fortes in his career. Licensed production in China for the local market has just began, outdoor furniture series made in Vietnam and aimed at the global market will be launched next spring.
Tapio Anttila’s prize exhibition at the Design Museum Gallery in Helsinki was recently opened for the public. It presents the production of this versatile and down-to-earth designer – and you are welcome to try it, too!
