Fennia Prize 2017

Achieve results through design! Fennia Prize is one of the most notable design competitions in Finland. It is organized by Design Forum Finland, Fennia Group, Elo and the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

Fennia Prize is a design competition where companies and organizations are awarded for exemplary use of design in both designing and realizing products, services, business processes or concepts. The aim of the competition, arranged every second year, is to promote the use of design in business and the society to enhance growth, competitiveness and internationalization. Fennia Prize offers an opportunity to stand out with innovative and responsible design, which is of economical significance. The Fennia Prize competition also includes an exhibition presenting the award-winning companies and organizations, and products, services and concepts, a prize catalogue and an expert seminar. The competition was now arranged for the 13th time.

The registration period for the competition was 16 May–5 September 2016. The competition entries were first evaluated by a preliminary jury. The Fennia Prize jury had two sessions. The results of the competition were announced 19 January 2017. More information about the results.

1. COMPETITION SERIES
There are two series in the competition: the General series and the Start up series. Enterprises that are no more than five years old may register in the Start up series. The firm or company is required to have been recorded in the Trade Register during the year 2012 at the earliest. All other companies and organizations are entered into the General series.

Designed products, concepts and services (hereinafter ‘competition entries’) in whose planning, realization, product development, manufacturing and corporate image design aspects have been applied in a comprehensive and innovative manner can be submitted in both series of the competition.

Entries submitted for the competition are required to have been made/launched in 2015 or later.

 

2. PRIZES
2.1. Prizes and honourable mentions

The Fennia Prizes and honourable mentions are awarded to companies or organizations.

One Fennia Prize Grand Prix, 2–4 Fennia Prize Winner awards and 15–20 Fennia Prize Honourable Mentions will awarded.

The total prize sum for the 2017 competition is €35,000. The Fennia Prize Grand Prix will be at least €15,000 and the prize jury will decide on awarding the remaining €20,000.

The prizes and honourable mentions will include participation in the Fennia Prize exhibition and the prize catalogue and the right to use the Fennia Prize logo in connection with the prize-winning product, concept or service and in related information and marketing.

2.2. The IPR Excellence Prize (Intellectual Property Rights)
The Finnish Patent and Registration Office will award one IPR Excellence Prize and the prize sum of €5,000.

The IPR Excellence Prize will go to a company or organization whose competition entry has promoted Finnish design competencies and activities at the corporate or organizational levels in Finland and internationally. The awarded company or organization has made use of the protection of model rights and other intellectual property rights (e.g. patents, trademarks or utility models), thus promoting the company’s competitiveness and business or organizational activities. Other evaluation criteria shall also be met in connection with this entry.

The recipient of the IPR Excellence Prize is chosen from among all the entrants of the Fennia Prize competition.

2.3. The Fennia Prize exhibition
The recipients of the Fennia Prizes and honourable mentions (including the IPR Excellence Prize) have the right and obligation to participate in the prize exhibition.

All products, services and concepts that have received prizes and honourable mentions will be featured in the Fennia Prize exhibition. The exhibition will tour, if possible, both in Finland and abroad and its size can be changed to suit individual venues.

The organizers of the exhibition shall be responsible for costs of transport and insurance during the exhibition and its tour. Participation in the exhibition will take place according to the instructions of the organizers of the competition.

The awarded companies and organizations, and products, services and concepts can be promoted both in Finland and internationally in connection with other events staged by Design Forum Finland, the Fennia Group and the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

2.4. Prize ceremony
The Fennia Prizes and Honourable Mentions will be awarded in early 2017 at a date to be announced later. 

2.5. Seminar
An expert seminar concerning the design and business sectors will be held in Helsinki in connection with the Fennia Prize competition at a date to be announced later.

2.6. Prize catalogue
The award-winning companies and organizations as well as products, services and concepts will be presented in the prize catalogue, which will also feature the designers of the awarded products, services and concepts.

2.7. The right to use the Fennia Prize logo
The recipients of the prizes and honourable mentions shall be entitled to use the Fennia Prize logo in information and marketing related to the awarded product, service etc.

 

3. THE PRIZE JURY AND THE PRELIMINARY PANEL
The prize jury consists of a maximum of nine members who are experts in the design, business and media sectors. Before the selection made by the jury, a preliminary panel of design professionals will evaluate all the submitted entries. The evaluations made by the preliminary jury shall serve as the basis for the work of the prize jury.

 

4. EVALUATION CRITERIA
The awarded company or organization is expected to fulfill the following evaluation criteria:

Customer orientation: Customers' wants and needs are considered to be the genuine starting point for a company or organization to design and realize its business operations or services.

Comprehensiveness: Design thinking permeates the identity of a company or organization and design DNA is consistently utilized in all activities.

Innovativeness: Company or organization utilizes innovations and new solutions in its business operations in order to stand out and gain success on the market.

Quality of design: Design is purposeful, original and distinctive and promotes sustainable development. Design appeals interestingly and enticingly to the target group of a product, service or concept.

The prize jury will evaluate the importance of specific criteria individually. The jury may also require products or services to exhibit other properties distinctive of good design that are not mentioned here.

 

5. SCHEDULE
The Fennia Prize competition is held every second year. The registration period for Fennia Prize 2017 is from the 16th of May to the 5th of September 2016. The evaluation of the competition entries will be made in October 2016. The production of the prize exhibition and the catalogue will start in November and the results of the competition will be announced in early 2017.

 

6. FENNIA PRIZE 2017 REGISTRATION
Registration for the competition is carried out electronically at the address: designforum.fi/fenniaprize17. The electronic registration form will be available from 16 May until Midnight (EET), 5 September 2016. The preliminary panel will consider all registrations only on the basis of the electronic registration material. 

6.1. Registration form

The following is to be given in the registration form:

1. The series of the entry: General / Start up
2. Name of the company or organization
3. Name or title of the competition entry
4. Category of the competition entry: Product / product family / concept / service
5. Customer target group of the entry: BtoB / BtoC
6. Information on the competition entry:
- Written description of the competition entry including the significance of the entry for the company / organization concerned (max. 150 words)
- Competition entry’s: Measures, weight / material / launch year / price / export countries / insurance value
- Information on the designers. N.B. the information given in this section will be used as such in the exhibition and the prize catalogue. We may request additional material if necessary.
- Information on design protection (trade dress) or any other protection of immaterial rights pertaining to the competition entry (e.g. patent, trademark, utility model) and details thereof (max. 100 words).
7. The contact person of the company / organization in competition matters with complete contact information:
- Name, position, address, email, telephone number
8. The name of the CEO / Managing Director of the company / organization with complete contact information:
- Name, address, email, telephone number
9. Acceptance of the terms of the competition and assurance of rights to the product concerned
- By filling in this section you give your assurance that you are authorized by the company to act in this matter and that you are authorized to make the commitments required by the terms of the competition (registration fee, participation fee, participation in the exhibition).

6.2. Visual materials of the competition entry
1–3 images of the competition entry in jpg or pdf format and a maximum size of 2 Mb/image. Please name the images clearly. We will separately request images for printing for the catalogue and exhibition from awarded companies. Design Forum Finland shall be entitled to use submitted images of competition entries for marketing the competition and in other activities.

 

7. FEES
7.1. Registration fee

The registration fee is €300 (including Finnish VAT 24%) / company or organization / entry. The payment is to be made with the web payment function in connection with the electronic registration form. Please note that the registration is valid only when the registration fee has been paid (N.B. the registration period).

7.2. Participation fee
Upon registering for the Fennia Prize 2017 competition, the company or organization agrees, if selected by the jury to receive a Fennia Prize or honourable mention, to pay the participation fee no later than 15 January 2017. The participation fee in the General series is €4,500 (+ VAT 24%) and €1,000 (+ VAT 24%) in the Start up series. The fee includes the award-winning company's participation in the prize catalogue and exhibition and the possible tour of the exhibition and covers their production costs.

 

8. ACCEPTANCE OF THE COMPETITION RULES AND BRIEF AND AGREEMENT
Upon registering, the company or organization gives its assurance that it has studied the competition rules and brief, accepts them, and agrees to pay the registration fee and the participation fee, if awarded a prize or honourable mention. The company or organization also gives its assurance that it possesses the rights to the competition entry.

By participating in the competition, the company or organization gives the organizers the right, without compensation, to use produced materials concerning the product for which the prize or honourable mention is given (e.g. photographs of products in printed and electronic format).

 

9. VALIDITY OF REGISTRATION
Registration shall come into force when registration has been carried out according to the given instructions and the registration fee has been paid. Please note that changes cannot be made to the registration form once it has been sent.

 

10. THE WORK OF THE PRIZE JURY AND THE PRESENTATION OF ENTRIES TO THE JURY
A company or organization registered in the competition agrees, if so requested, to send its entry to be inspected by the competition jury. The competition jury may request a representative of the company or organization to present the entry (max. 5 min. presentation). In these cases, the company or organization concerned shall pay any costs and insurance fees resulting from the presentation of the product.

 

11. THE ORGANIZERS OF THE COMPETITION
The competition is arranged by Design Forum Finland, the Fennia Group, Elo and the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

Design Forum Finland is the promotion organization for Finnish design maintained by the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design. Design Forum Finland is responsible for the realization of the competition, related information, the prize exhibition and its additional programme and the possible tour of the prize exhibition. 

The Fennia Group supports business and entrepreneurship and seeks to improve the competitiveness of businesses. The Fennia Prizes are donated by the Fennia Group and Elo.

The Finnish Patent and Registration Office advances technological and economic progress and corporate activities both in Finland and internationally. The IPR Excellence Prize is donated by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

§1 THE NAME OF THE COMPETITION
The name of the competition is “Fennia Prize – Good design grows global”. The competition can also be referred to as “Fennia Prize”.

The Fennia Prize competition is intended for companies and organizations making use of design in their products, services, business concepts etc.

The Fennia Prize seeks to encourage companies to make innovative and wide-ranging use of design (in product development, manufacturing and corporate image matters) and as a strategic asset. The competition is held every second year.

§2 THE ORGANIZERS OF THE COMPETITION
The Fennia Prize competition is organized by Design Forum Finland, the Fennia Group, Elo and the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

Design Forum Finland is the promotion organization for Finnish design maintained by the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design. It is responsible for the realization of the competition, related information, the prize exhibition and its additional programme, and the tour of the prize exhibition. 

The Fennia Group and Elo support business and entrepreneurship and seek to improve the competitiveness of businesses. The Fennia Prizes are donated by the Fennia Group and Elo.

The Finnish Patent and Registration Office advances technological and economic progress and corporate activities both in Finland and internationally. The IPR Excellence Prize is donated by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office.

§3 PARTICIPATION
The Fennia Prize competition is open to companies and organizations producing designed goods or making use of design in other ways in their business operations (e.g. services, concepts). Works of design (hereinafter ’competition entry’) realized during the period stipulated in the competition brief can be entered in the competition.

A separate competition brief is issued for the competition. The competition schedule, series, registration procedure, presentation materials of entries, registration and participation fees and the prize sums are ratified in the competition brief.

The competition brief is decided upon by the Board of Directors of Design Forum Finland on the basis of an agreement with the Fennia Group.

§4 EVALUATION CRITERIA
Companies and organizations that are awarded prizes or honourable mentions must demonstrate high-standard design competencies.

The awarded company or organization is expected to fulfill the following evaluation criteria:

§5 THE PRIZE JURY
The recipients of the Fennia Prizes and honourable mentions are chosen by a prize jury consisting of experts in design, business and the media. The jury makes its decisions based on evaluations made by a preliminary panel.

The prize jury shall consist of a maximum of nine members, of whom at least one is a prominent international figure in design. The jury includes representatives of the Fennia Group, the Finnish Patent and Registration Office and Design Forum Finland.

The prize jury is appointed by the Board of Directors of Design Forum Finland in accordance with an agreement with the Fennia Group. The prize jury does not give statements concerning its decisions.

§6 THE PRELIMINARY PANEL
A preliminary panel consisting of design professionals shall consider all the entries and give its evaluation, as a score, in written form. The evaluation is confidential and the preliminary panel is appointed by Design Forum Finland.

§7 THE COMPETITION SECRETARIAT
The representatives of the Fennia Group and Design Forum Finland shall serve as the secretaries of the competition

§8 PRIZES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Fennia Prizes and honourable mentions and the IPR Excellence Prize are awarded to companies or organizations.

One recipient of the Fennia Prize Grand Prix is chosen from among all the entrants. In addition, 2–4 Fennia Prize Winners are selected along with 15–20 Honourable Mentions. The prize sum is laid down in the competition brief. The prize jury may, by unanimous decision, award the prize sum in a different manner.

In addition to this, the Finnish Patent and Registration Office awards one IPR Excellence Prize in the competition.

The prizes and honourable mentions include participation in the Fennia Prize exhibition, its possible tour and the prize catalogue, as well as the right to use the Fennia Prize logo in connection with the prize-winning entry and in related information and marketing.

The announcement of the recipients of the Fennia Prizes and honourable mentions, as well as of the IPR Excellence Prize, is stipulated in the competition brief.

§9 REGISTRATION IN THE COMPETITION AND THE PRESENTATION MATERIALS OF PRODUCTS
Registration in the competition shall be carried out according to the instructions given in the competition brief.

A company or organization that has registered in the competition agrees, upon request, to provide its entry for inspection by the prize jury. The prize jury may request a representative of the company or organization to present the entry (max. 5 min. presentation). In these cases, the company or organization concerned shall pay any costs and insurance fees resulting from the presentation of the product.

§10 RIGHTS TO USE MATERIALS
Design Forum Finland and the Fennia Group have the right, without paying compensathaving read thion, to photograph the awarded entries and to use the materials of prize-winning companies and organizations, such as product photographs, in printed and electronic information and the marketing of the competition and the exhibition.

§11 ASSURANCE OF HAVING READ THE COMPATITION RULES
By participating in the competition, a company or organization also gives its assurance that it accepts the competition rules, the competition brief, the fees and other responsibilities of the competition and possesses the rights to the product or series of products entered into the competition.
