The Young Designer of the Year prize for 2002 was shared by carpenter and cabinetmaker Tuuli Autio and designer Pyry Tamminen. Both prize-winners are craftspersons and entrepreneurs, and their language of form is marked by timelessness, clarity and a sound knowledge of the material. Tuuli Autio's products are a beautiful combination of design and craftsmanship forming an inseparable whole. The simple and delicate wooden bowls and artefacts express respect for Finnish wooden materials and the skills of craftsmanship. Pyry Tamminen's works are simplified and lyrical with aesthetically pleasing combinations of materials such as silver and wood. All his artefacts and items of jewellery respect their materials, which are employed in ways specific to them, and with due skill.
