Young Designer of the Year 2002:
Tuuli Autio, Pyry Tamminen
The Young Designer of the Year prize for 2002, the sum of € 5,000, was shared by carpenter and cabinetmaker Tuuli Autio and designer Pyry Tamminen. Both prize-winners are craftspersons and entrepreneurs, and their language of form is marked by timelessness, clarity and a sound knowledge of the material.
Tuuli Autio
Tuuli Autio (b. 1974) and her husband are the founders of the Tuulipuu carpentry and cabinet making firm, whose products are based on an excellent knowledge of materials and high-standard manufacturing techniques. Autio’s simple and delicate wooden bowls and artefacts express respect for Finnish wooden materials and the skills of craftsmanship. Tuuli Autio’s work is based on a solid conception and her own line. Her products are a beautiful combination of design and craftsmanship forming an inseparable whole.
Pyry Tamminen
Pyry Tamminen (b. 1973) works as an entrepreneur in the Fiskars crafts and designer community in South Finland. He has been making silver objects since his graduate project in design studies. Pyry Tamminen’s idiom of form is marked by clarity combined with variety in expression. His works are simplified and lyrical, with aesthetically pleasing combinations of materials such as silver and wood. All his artefacts and items of jewellery respect their materials, which are employed in ways specific to them, and with due skill.
Autio’s and Tamminen’s works have been on show in several exhibitions both in Finland and abroad.
