Young Designer of the Year 2005:

Antti Hinkula, Teemu Suviala

The winner of the Young Designer of the Year Prize awarded by Design Forum Finland was announced on Wednesday, 23 March 2005. Founded in the Society's 125th anniversary year 2000, the prize is awarded for the fourth time. The Young Designer of the Year Prize for 2005 went to graphic designers Antti Hinkula and Teemu Suviala of the Syrup Helsinki creative agency.

The Young Designer of the Year Prize is now being awarded for the first time for graphic design. The different sectors of design have previously followed their own routes in a far too isolated manner. Today, boundaries are being crossed boldly and with an open mind; cooperation between the various areas of design has increased considerably. Graphic design offices such as Syrup Helsinki are a good example of this. The client gains the greatest benefits and competitive advantages from successful cooperation", notes Ilpo Santala, CEO of Design Forum Finland.

The purpose of the prize, which is donated this year by the Bob Helsinki marketing agency, is to encourage young designers to undertake uncompromising and original work in graphic design, interior architecture, crafts, applied art and design, in addition to presenting young designers to the public. The prize of 5,000 euros is awarded in recognition of exceptional, original and high-standard skills in the above areas. Previous recipients are designers Harri Koskinen and Ilkka Suppanen (2000), interior architect Eeva Lithovius and the architect Karola Sahi (2001), and the designer and cabinet-maker Tuuli Autio together with designer and silver smith Pyry Tamminen (2002).

The winners of the prize for 2005, Antti Hinkula and Teemu Suviala, are graphic designers who have achieved international success and recognition. They have created visual concepts and strategies for a wide range of contexts, from brand and corporate identities to the visual images of events, products and campaigns. Their professional expertise includes concept, fashion and spatial design, in addition to illustrations and the production of music videos. Hinkula and Suviala work in both printed and electronic media, television, mobile communications and the Internet. Their clients include Amnesty International, Escalator Records, General Electrics, Image Kustannus, Leaf, Le Shop Stockholm, MTV 3, Nokia, the National Theatre of Finland, Trans Europe Express festival, Toyota, Valio, Vice magazine, the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE and Yoko Deveraux.
