Young Designer of the Year – where is Laura now?

Furniture designer Laura Väre was chosen Young designer of the year 2019 in August. We interviewed Laura in early December – where is she now, how was the autumn and what will the new year 2020 bring?

Laura, how was your autumn after you received the award?

It has been a very busy and full autumn! There have been lots of interesting projects, including the prize exhibition at Lokal+ Gallery and another showing at Habitare at the same time. Then I have travelled both in Lapland and China. In China I had a small stand with Henri Judin and Lassi Alestalo at Chengdu Creative and Design Week.

In January you are travelling to Paris, where you will be resident artist of Institut finlandais and its IF Studios program. The participation in the residence program, organized in cooperation with Institut finlandais, is part of the Young Designer of the Year prize in 2018–2020. What are your feelings before the visit?

I am eagerly waiting for it! I’m expecting new opportunities for collaboration and contacts with companies and manufacturers. I’m going to visit the Maison & Objet Fair; a plant box designed by me will be on show there, too. I’ll tour museums and art galleries, too, meet company representatives and establish new contacts. I’m going to walk around, look around and make discoveries – and amid all this, also relax and give room for new ideas.

Your exhibition Carte Blanche à Laura Väre will open at the Institute’s gallery on 17 January. What will you show there?

There will be lamps, furniture and interior accessories. Works from the past five years, the latest from this year. Several of the products fit both homes and public spaces or offices. The exhibition will have the green velvet sofa Ebba, fringed lamps, mirrors, a plant box, the wooden W Chair and the Aava lamp, plus Donut candleholders, among other things.

Your exhibition in Paris ends as late as 28 March. What are your plans for the rest of the spring?

In addition to the exhibition in Paris, my intention is to participate trade fairs in Europe and Asia, and I plan to design new products for these. I’m not able to tell much more about the projects, but there will be a couple of product design projects for the coming year, and possibly a more artistic thing. I’m very excited about both the present and upcoming projects!
